はめ【羽目】

1 〔羽目板〕 a panel (board); 〔腰羽目〕 a wainscot; a dado 《pl. ～(e)s》. [⇒はめいた]

●羽目を張る fit paneling [wainscoting].

2 〔好ましくない状況〕 a difficult [an awkward, a tricky] situation; a tight corner; a fix; a mess.

●妙な羽目になった. Things have come to a strange [pretty] pass. | This is a nice fix [mess]

・そんな羽目に陥って私は大いに後悔した. I deeply regretted getting myself into such a plight [dire straits].

・みんなの前でスピーチをしなければならぬ羽目になった. I found myself in a situation where I had to make a speech in front of everyone.

羽目をはずす break out of bounds; step over the line.
